We’d like to share the results of the recent Battle of the Best 2012 organized by KDU to find, inspire and give talents the opportunity to compete against one another. The Games Department organized a workshop for designing super-heroes and participants were guided through the design process and a basic illustration before being allowed to start their own superhero designs. Here are the results for the top-three awesome entries.

by Muhammad Aizat bin Azrul Hisham from SMK USJ13

by Ee Wen Xin from SMK Seksyen 1, Bandar Kinrara

by Chow Ken Hong from SMK DU9

Congratulations to the winners and we hope the prizes will help starting you off to a career in giving life to your imagination!

Banshee Creative visits KDU!

Jul 16, 2012   //   by Ivan   //   MainMenu  //  No Comments

Lately, we were visited by professional comic artist Sheldon Goh and writer Angelia Ong who are both part of Banshee Creative. They came for our latest Fun Friday to share with our budding Game Developers the facts and processes of creating a comic, from scripting all the way to publishing. They left the students with invaluable pointers as to how the process actually begins and what is the sort of mind-set needed to start a career in not just comics but in the animation and games industry as well.

More information about Sheldon Goh and the art he creates.

A truly informative talk and sharing session. They’ve promised to come back for future talks and workshops so stay informed!

Rolling with SMKSJ

Jul 16, 2012   //   by Ivan   //   MainMenu  //  No Comments

You’ll never guess where the KDU Hilux will go next! We were recently at SMK Subang Jaya’s career day on the 10th of July to bring some Ultimate Marvel vs. Street Fighter challenge to the kids there. We were mobbed during the recess period (not that we’re complaining!) We loved it! Thanks for having us SMKSJians! We’ll be sure to come back next year!

Many thanks to the supportive teachers that allowed us to be part of the event!

Taboo

Jul 10, 2012   //   by Ivan   //   MainMenu  //  No Comments

The dictionary definition of Taboo was separated or set apart as sacred; forbidden forgeneral use; placed under a prohibition or ban. Synonyms:sacrosanct, inviolable.

The board-game however was the focus of last week’s Fun Friday when students and staff sat down to get to the bottom of this deviously tricky game. While the premise was relatively simple to understand, it takes some getting used to actually get the hang of it. How it works is this, players are split into teams and they take turns to draw cards with words on them. The selected player has to get his/her team to figure out the word on the card while also not SPEAKING out the words written on it. You keep on going until the sands of time run out and you count the points (guessed words) for that round before passing the turn on to the next team. The words written on the cards are the ‘taboo’ portion of the game.

The box came with tons of cards, a little hourglass and also a cool buzzer to buzz out players that have either run out of time or said one of the ‘taboo’ words. It was truly a mind-bending experience as some of the students can attest to.

Jun 18, 2012   //   by Ivan   //   MainMenu  //  No Comments

We’ve just launched our first Fun Friday and everyone got to watch a documentary which should be near and dear to our hearts, it exposes the process of development the pain and finally much-sought after success. I’m talking about Indie Game the Movie. Check out the trailer below to see for yourself what its all about.

Strangely enough, the movie is available on STEAM, which is one of the world’s largest online game stores around.

Now all thats needed is for someone to make Indie Movie the Game.

Overly excited students waiting for Fun Friday to start.

Meeting Richard Lemarchand, Game Designer for Uncharted in Malaysia

Jun 13, 2012   //   by Hilmy   //   MainMenu  //  No Comments

Richard Lemarchand, the game designer for Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series (and many other games) was in Malaysia for a holiday. By sheer dumb luck or a plan laid by local persons got a higher power approval – should we call it smart luck, then? –  word came out that local developers will get the chance to hear his talk and meet him. He gave his talk last Friday (June 8th) at Publika Solaris Dutamas, and the developers hung around at Bee’s Publika for a meet and greet. Read more >>
